Environmental Action Group

Environmental Action Group

Chair: Stan Alprin

Reverence and respect for "the Web of Life, of which we are a part," is one of the seven Unitarian Universalist Principles.  East Shore's Environmental Action Group strives to do its part to provide leadership in educating, focusing, and guiding our Congregation in effective action to help save the Web of Life.

Our efforts include organizing a paper (office and newspaper) recycling program that brings a small income to the church each month, as well as many undertakings to educate ourselves, our Congregation, and the wider community on environmental issues.  We use such venues as Earth Day each year, periodic millennium salons, and adult religious education offerings to bring increased attention to environmental issues within our Church community and beyond.

Our ultimate goal is to make our church as environmentally friendly ("green") as possible.  For example, soon we will be collecting vegetable scraps from our church kitchen to be used in composting.  Also, we have been investigating the feasibility of installing solar panels on sections of the church roof to generate some renewable energy for church use.

ONGOING  PROJECTS

Environmental Behavior Survey

The Environmental Action Group is conducting a survey on the environmental behavior of our congregation.  The results will be used to determine the types of educational activities the Environmental Action group will conduct.;  Please place your completed survey in the basket marked "Environmental Survey" next to the Heinens table as soon as possible.  The results will be presented on May 20, 2007 during our Earth Day celebration.  View or print survey here.

SHOW YOUR MUG AT CHURCH

Please join East Shore's Environmental Action Group in "showing your mug at church."  To help reduce the amount of trash we generate in paper cups (as well as their expense), bring your own mug to church every Sunday for Coffee Hour.  Then take your mug home after coffee hour and wash it with your other dishes.  This will also help the church to save on electric energy, water, and soap.  AND it will mean less work for East Shore's kitchen volunteers.  Besides, it will be fun to share those mugs we all have with clever sayings, cartoons, etc.  If you're worried about a "mug mix-up," just write your name on the bottom of your mug in permanent marker "just in case."
