25 YEARS OF HELPING THE NEEDY

The Salvation Army in Painesville, being the only meal provider and food pantry for the poor in Lake County, issued a plea to area churches to help. This plea was answered by East Shore and has continued to answer the plea that came in 1978. Erma Fahr was the first to start it for East Shore and then it was taken over by Art Martin.

The first Sunday of each month we collect non-perishable food items and cash and deliver it to the Salvation Army. They provide hot meals every day to the less fortunate as well as distribute food via their food pantry. 2002 being a typical year for our donations we donated 1609 units of non-perishable food (a unit is 1 8 oz. can) and $410 in cash.

Kate Porter noted that we had an especially large donation on September 7, 2003 thanks to Nicole's son Kirk, who celebrated his birthday this summer and asked guests to bring non-perishable food instead of gifts. What a great idea for any celebration-- anniversary, retirement, etc. So many invitations say "no gifts please." How about simply "a can of food for the needy"?

We did a very good job in our first two winter collections of food for the Salvation Army, when it is so very important. The latest collection in February placed in the Little Red Wagon included 146 units of food. We also gave $40 in cash. A unit is one 8 ounce can or the equilvalent. This food is taken to the Salvation Army in Painesville and used in their food preparation or distributed through their Food Pantry. If you have not participated in this program of our church please consider bringing to the church some non-perishable food items on Sunday, March 7 or before, and placing them in the wagon. Also, on the 7th a basket will be in the Narthex for cash donations.
